Moving furniture can be a hassle at the best of times but it gets even more complicated when you’re dealing with heavy items. Possibly the most daunting piece of furniture to attempt to move is a piano. Regardless of the size, they tend to be heavy, awkward to move, and very fragile. Not an easy combination! If you’re nervous about having to move your piano, we’re here to share our tips for the removal process.
Plan your route
The best place to start is to decide the best route for getting your piano to its final destination – even the smallest piano is very awkward to move and you don’t want to get stuck halfway through a doorway. Once you have dimensions, you can check to make sure the piano will fit and remove any obstacles as required. In some cases, you may need to
move other furniture out of hallways or take doors off hinges to get it in. Also, you need to make sure that the truck you’ve organised is big enough to facilitate the move.
Prepare your piano
The next step is to get your piano ready for the move. Secure the piano lid properly – if there’s no lock, carefully use tape to keep it shut. Remember that the wheels of a piano are not designed to move the piano, particularly for moving it off and on trucks, and are generally decorative only. With that in mind, it’s a good idea to remove the wheels before the move. Next, carefully wrap the piano with plenty of blankets and padding to protect it from scratches and other damage. Ask your removalist to take a look before you start moving and they can confirm whether it not it needs more protection.
Organise a removalist
When it comes to moving a piano, it’s best to use experienced removalists for this process. Although you may be able to find enough people to help with the lifting, pianos are extremely fragile and need to be carried and lifted on and off the truck correctly. With that in mind, make sure you book a company who has the right experience for the job. First of all, go online and check out their website to see if they specify that they can help with heavy items such as pianos. Call ahead before you book and confirm that they can help with a piano – don’t drop it on them on the day that a piano is included in the move.
